This morning when I picked up the newspaper, my eyes groggy and coffee still brewing, I was unpleasantly greeted with the headline: “Prominent psychiatrist killed by patient.” I was saddened and dumbfounded at the murder of Dr. Wayne S. Fenton, who was the associate director of the National Institute of Mental Health and an extremely important doctor who treated people with schizophrenia. I was upset about the loss of an important colleague, both personally and professionally. This, my instincts told me, could change the field of mental health as professionals know it.
As a psychotherapist with 30 years of practice under my belt, I see newsworthy events like Dr. Fenton’s murder as opportunities for me to get my message of “stop the violence” out to the public. My experience in mental health, addictions, and criminal justice has led me to develop several violence assessment tools for men, women, and youth. I recently wrote a book, How Children Become Violent: Keeping Your Kids out of Gangs, Terrorist Organizations, and Cults, which is an invaluable anti-violence resource for therapists, parents, and victims alike—and how ironic, that the patient who’s suspected of murdering Dr. Fenton is only 19 years old.
