The Tug Fork River is no stranger to blood. It cuts through the Appalachian Mountains and, for much of its course, separates West Virginia from Kentucky. In the late 1800’s, one family, the Hatfields, lived on the West Virginia side of the Tug Fork. Another, the McCoys, made the Kentucky side of the river their home.
The Hatfields and the McCoys got into a famous feud that lasted 11 years. It led to more than two dozen violent deaths, seven life prison sentences, and one hanging. Eventually, the violence ran its course. Both sides decided enough was enough, and they found a way to get along.
In business, we have our own version of the Hatfields and the McCoys; the Branding and Direct Marketing “families” have gotten into a nasty feud of their own.
